To meet evolving clinical standards and ensure the safety of clients in healthcare and rehabilitation settings, CSEP is updating its CPR certification requirement for Clinical Exercise Physiologists (CEPs). Beginning April 1, 2026, only Basic Life Support (BLS CPR) certification will be accepted for membership renewal.

What This Means for You If you are a CSEP-CEP:
  • CPR-C remains valid until March 31, 2026.
  • Starting in 2026, BLS CPR is required for all CSEP-CEP membership renewals.
  • If BLS CPR certification is not submitted by your renewal date, your CSEP Professional Liability Insurance will not be valid until proof of certification is received.
  • If you are a CSEP-CPT:
    • You may continue using CPR-C for renewals.
    • BLS CPR is recommended if working in clinical environments
Why This Change Is Happening

The update reflects CSEP’s alignment with national health organizations that recognize BLS CPR as the standard for professionals working in healthcare settings. Unlike CPR-C, which is intended for general public use, BLS CPR includes advanced resuscitation techniques and team-based response procedures.

Key Points to Know

  • BLS CPR and CPR-C are similar in cost and course duration
  • BLS CPR is offered by major national providers
  • Beginning in 2025, CPR courses (including BLS) will be eligible for 4 Professional Development Credits (PDCs)
  • This requirement only applies to CSEP-CEPs
  • No special tracking or reporting is needed before your renewal deadline of March 31, 2026.

Where to Take a BLS CPR Course?

CSEP recommends choosing a provider with national recognition:

  • Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada
  • Canadian Red Cross
  • John Ambulance
  • Lifesaving Society
