New multilingual tools improve access to evidence-based guidance on physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep for diverse communities across Canada
Ottawa, ON — March 11, 2026 — The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) is expanding Canada’s 24-Hour Movement Guidelines with new multilingual resources, helping more people across the country access evidence-based guidance on physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep.
The expansion makes the Guidelines available in 12 languages, improving access to trusted information about healthy daily movement for diverse communities across Canada.
This national initiative is delivered through CSEP’s 24-Hour Movement Guidelines Impact Project, supported by $551,000 in funding from the Government of Canada through the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Healthy Canadians and Communities Fund. The project is led by CSEP in partnership with the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation at the University of Alberta, with funding support from the Public Health Agency of Canada. The expanded multilingual resources are available at csepguidelines.ca.
“Expanding access to trusted health information is key to advancing health equity,” said Kalie McKenna, Executive Director of CSEP. “By offering Canada’s 24-Hour Movement Guidelines in multiple languages, we’re helping more Canadians access clear, evidence-based guidance so they can make informed choices and build healthy daily movement into their lives.”
“Expanding the guidelines and related resources into multiple languages will enhance the accessibility of research-informed guidance regarding physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep for families, educators, exercise and health professionals, and organizations throughout Canada.” Said Dr. Valerie Carson, Professor, Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation, University of Alberta
Expanding Access to Evidence-Based Guidance
As part of this initiative, the 24-Hour Movement Guidelines and supporting tools are now available in English, French, Arabic, Greek, German, Brazilian Portuguese, Tagalog, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Italian, and Punjabi.
These languages were selected to better reflect the linguistic diversity of communities across Canada and to support organizations working with newcomer, immigrant, and culturally diverse populations.
The multilingual expansion applies to Guidelines for all life stages, including:
- Early years (0–4 years)
- Children and youth (5–17 years)
- Adults (18–64 years)
- Older adults (65+ years)
Providing consistent, language-specific guidance across life stages helps families, caregivers, and professionals apply the Guidelines in everyday settings.
Tools for Health Professionals and Organizations
CSEP has also expanded access to practical tools designed to support implementation in health care, community, and public health settings, including:
- Toolkits for primary care providers
- A physiotherapy toolkit
- A 24-Hour Movement Guidelines counselling tool for adults and older adults
These resources help health professionals deliver inclusive, culturally responsive care and support conversations about physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep.
Multilingual tools can help bridge communication gaps, improve understanding, and strengthen engagement with diverse communities.
Government of Canada Support
This initiative is supported by the Government of Canada through the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Healthy Canadians and Communities Fund, which invests in projects that improve health outcomes and reduce health inequities across the country.
