CSEP has announced an important update to the CPR certification requirements for Clinical Exercise Physiologists (CSEP-CEPs). Beginning with the 2026 renewal period (January 1–March 31, 2026), all CSEP-CEPs will be required to hold Basic Life Support (BLS CPR) certification at the time of membership renewal. This replaces the previous standard, CPR-C, which will continue to be accepted only until March 31, 2026.

Important: If you do not submit proof of BLS CPR certification by your 2026 renewal date, your CSEP Professional Liability Insurance will not be valid until certification is received.

This change reflects CSEP’s ongoing commitment to align with healthcare sector expectations and ensure that our certified professionals are equipped to perform in clinical environments where immediate, high-quality responses to cardiac events are crucial.

What’s Changing?

  • CSEP-CEPs must hold valid BLS CPR certification for membership renewal during the 2026 renewal period.
  • CPR-C remains valid until March 31, 2026.
  • CSEP-CPTs may continue using CPR-C, although BLS CPR is encouraged.
  • There is no significant difference in cost or course time between BLS CPR and CPR-C.

Earn Professional Development Credits (PDCs):

Starting in 2025, CSEP Professional Members will earn 4 PDCs for completing an eligible CPR course, including BLS CPR.

Where to Get Certified:

BLS CPR is available through several national providers:

  • Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada
  • Canadian Red Cross
  • John Ambulance
  • Lifesaving Society

CSEP members can access discounts on CPR courses by logging in to their CSEP Store account.

Submitting Certification

CSEP members can submit their CPR-BLS certification by visiting their CSEP Store Account and following the on-screen instructions.

Next Steps

If your current CPR certification expires before March 31, 2026, you may continue using CPR-C for renewal. If your renewal takes place in 2026, ensure that you complete a BLS CPR course and submit proof of certification by your renewal date to maintain membership and liability insurance coverage.
