OTTAWA – As the gold standard in exercise science and personal training, the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) continues to evolve to reflect the latest research, population needs, industry trends and member input. In November 2019, the CSEP membership voted to amend the title of the CSEP Certified Exercise Physiologist® to CSEP Clinical Exercise Physiologist™️.

The most qualified exercise professionals in Canada, CSEP-CEPs work in both clinical and fitness settings, applying advanced education, skills and experience to improve and maintain the health and quality of life of individuals, including those living with chronic conditions. This change in title highlights the clinical populations that CSEP Clinical Exercise Physiologists™️ (CSEP-CEP) are currently working with, and focuses the broad area of study and experience required of candidates pursuing the CSEP-CEP certification.

“The new certification title aligns the knowledge and skills CSEP-CEPs have with the needs of health care professionals seeking primary healthcare referrals. CSEP Clinical Exercise Physiologist™️ reflects the reality of the work a CSEP-CEP does and the clients they work with,” says Dr. Adam Upshaw, CSEP-CEP, Chair, CSEP Board of Directors.

The Scope of Practice for the CSEP Clinical Exercise Physiologist™️ remains among the most all-encompassing of the allied healthcare professionals, covering assessment and exercise prescription for healthy individuals, those living with chronic conditions, a disability, or obesity. Through a client centred process, CSEP-CEPs perform assessments, prescribes conditioning exercise, as well as exercise supervision, counselling and healthy lifestyle education.

CSEP-CEPs work in rehabilitation clinics, university and research labs, and anywhere where the pursuit of healthier active living is sought. For more information on the CSEP Clinical Exercise Physiologist™️, or to find one in your region, please visit www.csep.ca/csep-cep.
